Coldwell Rocks: Friday, November 23rd, 2012

This was a trial for the forthcoming Shadowlands walk for Borderlines in March. Coldwell Walks were laid out in the "Picturesque" manner by Edward Machen of English Bicknor Court in the first half of the nineteenth century. Machen was responsible for planting millions of trees in enclosed areas of the Forest of Dean. There is a good interpretation board for English Bicknor in the car park beside the road to the primary school.

Looking 'landwards' from the far tip of the magnificent "Ship Rock", a narrow fin-like projection with precipitous drops on both sides:


Looking up at one of the Coldwell Rocks from the abandoned railway track below; it was at this point that I heard the unmistakable cry of a Peregrine:
