Wednesday 31st July: walk for River Wye Preservation Trust

Organised by  liaison with Simon Dereham and Sandra Willetts. A good turnout - around 30 people - for this annual event. In the late afternoon we explored the remains of Symonds Yat station with the aid of historic photographs then crossed the river on the foot ferry to examine the excellent interpretation board and the site of New Weir and its associated forge. Andrew Blake from the AONB was present to provide additional background to the Overlooking the Wye project and to Symonds Yat and the Wye Valley and their history. We then recrossed the Wye on the ferry (cheery photo below) and the party set off for a picnic aboard a Kingfisher cruiser. The young ferryman told us that BBC TV had recently been filming for Countryfile at Symonds Yat.
